Alfred Karl Becker, age 80 of Port Austin (formerly of Detroit) passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at his home.
He was born in Detroit on March 5, 1934, son of the late Alfred and Elsie (Werner) Becker. On July 11, 1981 he was united in marriage to Ruth E. Henkelmann at Truth Lutheran Church, Detroit. She preceded him in death on November 16, 2002. Fred was a faithful husband and dearly loved Ruth.
Fred attended high school in Detroit and graduated with his Associates of Arts Degree from South Macomb College in 1962. In 1966 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree and Teaching Certificate from the University of Michigan, and obtained his Masters Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1977. He retired from the Detroit Public Educational System and moved to Port Austin with his wife Ruth. Fred was a member of the Retired Michigan School Employees Association.
Throughout his lifetime Fred enjoyed coaching little league, especially hockey, basketball and baseball. He was also a MHAA sports official for Junior and Senior High School athletics for many years in Huron County. He loved drawing and sketching and his motorized model airplane collection. He was a volunteer with the Port Austin Community players and the local EMS Squad, cleaning equipment. While attending St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Kinde he assisted the church organist.
His survivors include his brother- and sister-in-law, Rev. Frederick and Raylene Henkelmann of Pigeon and their children Sarah, Matthew and Rachel. He is also survived by cousins in Pennsylvania.
Funeral services for Alfred K. Becker will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. Rev. Frederick Henkelmann will officiate. Burial will be in Cross Lutheran Church Cemetery, Pigeon.
Memorials may be given to the Charity of the Donor's choice.
