Bernard L. McDurmon of Caro, age 84, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Covenant Health Care - Cooper in Saginaw. Bernie was born August 16, 1931 in Caro, the son of the late Myrtle Martin and graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1950. Following graduation, Bernie enlisted in the U.S. Army and was attached to the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1950-1954 during the Korean War. He was united in marriage with the former Joanne Carole Hill on August 30, 1952, and the couple celebrated sixty-three years of marriage prior to Joanne's death on November 1, 2015. Upon his return to Caro following the war, Bernie worked as a typesetter at the Tuscola County Advertiser and then for the next twenty-five years with the Saginaw News, with stints in between working construction with Whalen Contracting and Anthes Brothers Building and Movers. He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church and the Caro Moose Lodge #1049. Bernie enjoyed auto racing, snowmobiling and his motorcycle. His life revolved around his family and he enthusiastically supported all of his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's activities. Bernie is survived by three children and their spouses, Terry & Ann Marie McDurmon of Bay City, Shelly Luther of Caro, Shirley & Don Hodgkinson of Caro; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Andrew & Heidi McDurmon of Sugar Loaf Key, Florida, Adam & Jennifer McDurmon of Munger, Sarah & Robert Reinelt of Caro, Corey & Camille Hodgkinson of Caro, Joshua Hodgkinson of West Olive, Allison & James Kitchen of Munger, Crista & Jay Hendges of Holland, Robert Luther of Caro; five great-grandchildren, Jordan Kitchen, Grace and Taylor Reinelt, Emersyn and Reagan Hodgkinson; one sister, Georgia Weston of Cocoa, Florida; cousin, Ken & Lareta Wilsie of Missouri; two brothers-in-law, David & Diane Hill of Nebraska, Richard Hill of Florida; sister-in-law, Joyce & Jim Ford of Wolverine; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Bernie was preceded in death by one son, Kenny McDurmon; a brother-in-law, Roy H. Weston; and a son-in-law, Alan Luther. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 1, 2016 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Rev. Dorothy Thon officiating. Burial will follow at the Indianfields Township Cemetery in Caro with military honors rendered by the Caro American Legion Post #7 and the U.S. Army.
