Bertha Mildred Hahn, age 86, of Caro died on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at St. Marys of Michigan. Bertha was born on February 16, 1923 in Akron to the late Arthur and Mildred (Edgerton) Esckilsen. She was a lifelong resident of Tuscola County having moved from Akron to Cass City, to Kingston, and finally to Caro in 1979. The former Bertha Esckilsen married Donald Clarence Cross, who preceded her in death. She then married Simon Jacob Hahn and he also preceded her in death. Bertha received her G.E.D. from Lansing in 1979. In addition to being a homemaker, mother and wife, she had worked as a nurses aide at Marlette Community Hospital, Memorial Wing, and later in housekeeping at the Sunset Motel, and later the Kingsway Motel. Bertha was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #7 Auxiliary. In addition to her family, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, picture puzzles and ceramics. She is survived by eight children, Jeannette (Tom) Shaver-Simon of Caro, Larry Cross of Cass City, Donna Cross of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Richard Cross of St. Ignace, Dennis (Grace) Cross of Elmira, Diane Hahn of St. Clair Shores, Betty (Larry) Hendricks of Swartz Creek and Joseph (Christine) Hahn of Edgewood, New Mexico; nineteen grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; her siblings, Iva Rockwell of Cass City, Esther Guinther of Cass City, Theron (Mabel) Esckilsen of Cass City, Viola Layer of Caro, Clinton (Joyce) Esckilsen of Nekoma, North Dakota and Rev. Judy Esckilsen of Cass City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Esckilsen; and three brothers-in-law, Morris Rockwell, Harold Guinther and Jim Hayes. Funeral Liturgy will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro on Monday, July 20, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Kucharczyk officiating. Rite of Committal will be at Kingston Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Collon Funeral Home on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to Jeannette Shaver for the Bertha Hahn family discretionary fund.
