Burton L. Furness, age 58, of Elkton died following an 8 year battle with cancer, Monday afternoon, September 10, at home with his family at his side.
He was born November 19, 1948 in Bad Axe to the late Stanford and Bernice (Morell) Furness.
Burt lived in the Elkton area all his life. After graduating from Laker High School in 1966, he went on to trade school and became a tool and die maker. He then began his career with Sebewaing Industries.
On August 9, 1969, he was united in marriage to Mary L. Buchholz at St. Francis Catholic Church, Pigeon.
Burt worked at Sebewaing Industries until the plant closed. Then became a tool and die maker for Millennium Industries, Cass City, retiring earlier this year for health reasons.
He was a member of St Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon and had served on the parish council and as a Eucharistic minister. Burt served as captain on the Oliver Twp. Fire Dept for many years and was an instructor for the firefighter training program. He also served as an EMT on the Elkton Ambulance, was a past president of the Elkton Jaycees and a member of the Rifleriver Muzzle Loaders Assn. Burt enjoyed riding his motorcycle, camping, hunting, and building and using muzzle loader rifles.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; two children, Christina Wade and her husband L. J. of Meade Twp. and Matt Furness and his special friend, Bea Valle and her children, Stacey, Payton, Larry and Raygan of Haltom City, TX; three grandchildren, Zachary, Ashley and Isaac and two sisters, Jeanette Furness of Washington, MI and Eileen (Gary) Stempin of Las Vegas, NV.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 AM Friday at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Pigeon. Friends may call at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton from 7 to 9 Wednesday, 2 to 9 PM Thursday and after 9:30 AM Friday morning. A firefighter memorial service will be held 7:00 PM Thursday evening by all Huron County Dept's.
Memorials may be given to Home and Hospice Advantage or The Josephine Cancer Center at Henry Ford Hospital.
