Byron I Groff, age 89, former owner of Groff General Store at Gotts Corner died Friday morning, June 21, at his home in Caseville.
He was born August 18, 1912 in Bay City to the late Carl and Helen (LaRocque) Groff. Byron grew up in the Bay City area and on May 21, 1934 he was united in marriage to June Petersen in Bay City.
In 1946, he moved to Gotts Corner and opened the grocery store, operating it until it’s closing in 1969. He then worked at General Cable in Cass City until retiring in 1977. They moved to Bay City in 1980 and retired to Caseville in 1991.
He was a past member of St. Felix Catholic Church, Pinnebog, 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, former member of the Elkton Rotary Club and served on the Elkton-Pigeon Bay Port School Board as treasurer for 12 years.
Surviving are his wife, June; his children, Julie Daly of Mesa, AZ and Mike (Dianna) Groff of Caseville; four grandchildren, Pam Maas, Beth (Mark) Sheffer, Katherine (David)Lecznar and Peter Groff; six great grandchildren, Doug, Adam, Christopher, Brandon Kyra and Steven and his sister, Bernice Hertel of Corona, CA.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Monday, June 24, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Caseville. Rev. Fr. Joseph Schabel will officiate with burial at Floral Garden Cemetery, Bay City. Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday and after 10:00 AM Monday.
Memorials may be given to Parkinson’s Foundation or the Leukemia Foundation.
