Carl Baur, age 92, of Caro passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, August 16, 2008. He was born on January 30, 1916 in Sebewaing and lived most of his life in the Thumb, wintering in Texas, and was a Caro High School graduate. On July 13, 1963 he married the former Elva (Cookenmaster) Romain at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro. His beloved wife and friend preceded him in death on March 1, 2005. Carl worked for General Motors as a millwright in Detroit and then Grey Iron Foundry in Saginaw until his retirement. In addition to working at the shop, Carl was a self-employed farmer. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, dining out at Kraziacks and had traveled extensively overseas to Luxemburg, Australia, and several trips to Hawaii. Carl was involved in senior citizen activities and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He is survived by his step-children, Elaine (Lewis) Thomas of Clio, Tom (Marion) Romain of Caro and step-daughter-in-law, Elaine Romain of Caro; eight step-grandchildren and several step-great- grandchildren; a sister-in-law; Marjorie (Jack) Ballard of Charlotte; three nieces, Cynthia (Gill) VanNest of Charlotte, Diane (David) Franz of Lansing and Mary (Van) Wertz of Charlotte; several great- nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roland and Kenneth Baur; a step-son, Gerald Romain; and a step-grandson-in-law, Kevin Oakie. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Cameron Steele officiating. Cremation has taken place and burial will follow at a later date. There will be no visitation at the Collon Funeral Home or the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
