Carl Norman Schroeder, Ed.D

Carl Schroeder of Caro, age 93, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Heritage Hill Assisted Living. He was born April 16, 1921, the son of the late Carl and Martha (Deering) Schroeder. Carl entered the U.S. Army on April 2, 1946 and entered Japan shortly after the atomic bomb, and started a school for American troops in Japan. He was united in marriage with the former Shirley (Young) Willits on June 8, 1991 at the Caro United Methodist Church, and she survives him. Carl's life was dedicated to education. He received his Bachelor Degree from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, and became Caro's first elementary school principal. Carl received his Doctorate from Cornell University. He was Dean at Towson State University, and Director of Education for the State of Maryland for sixteen years, retiring on July 1, 1982. Carl was co-founder of Caro's skating rink, founder of the adult education program in Caro, and loved fishing, hunting, walking, and raising his family. Carl is survived by his wife, Shirley Willits Schroeder of Caro; two daughters, Deborah Schroeder of Frederick, Maryland, Amy & Scott Orr of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two sons, David & Meri Schroeder of Frederick, Maryland, Thomas Schroeder of Eldon, Missouri; and six grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Clair. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the Caro United Methodist Church with Rev. Gregg Mayberry officiating.
