Carl E. Schmidt

Carl Elmer Schmidt, age 77, of Sand Point, passed away peacefully at home after a valiant battle with cancer, on August 16, 2017. Carl was born in Detroit on October 15, 1939, to the late Elmer Carl and Alice (Heikka) Schmidt. He married Judith Ann Swartzbaugh on September 1, 1962.

Carl grew up in Grosse Point, Michigan. He graduated from Grosse Pointe High in 1957. After high school Carl joined the United State Navy, where he served on the U.S.S. Fidelity MSO during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Carl then studied Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Tech and later transferred to Michigan State University. At MSU, Carl's dear friend and roommate, Jim Burnam, introduced him to his wife, Judy, who was the dear friend and roommate of Jim's wife, Barb. Carl retired from his own engineering firm and ABB. Carl and Judy built their retirement home, that Carl designed, at the site of Judy's family cottage, known as "Just A Siesta", in 1994 and loved the sun and water.

Carl and Judy have two daughters: Dr. Polly Schmidt and Attorney Jill L. Schmidt. Carl's sister, Suzanne Schmidt Boyer also survive him, Judy preceded Carl in death on July 21, 2016.

Carl had a knack for fixing things, often with lots of glue and screws. He enjoyed reading his impressive collection of the great literary works. He loved crossword puzzles, reading the Wall Street Journal and cooking lots of exotic foods with his many kitchen gadgets. Carl was active in his church, Good Shephard Lutheran.

Carl had been busy painting and prepping his beautiful deck that overlooks the water, to celebrate in the sun with food, family and friends. Carl's favorite pastime was enjoying laughs, snuggles and kisses from his treasured boys, grandpup Prometheus Valentine, grandkitty Jinx, and very special honorary grandson, Benji Riskey. He will be missed dearly by all.

Cremation has taken place. To follow through with Carl's wishes of a big deck party, we will celebrate his life at his home on Sand Point on August 26, 2017 at 1pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Thumb Animal Shelter in Elkton, MI, in his honor.
