Charles W. Curtis

Charles W. Curtis of Caro, age 91, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Carey's Young at Heart Adult Foster Care Home in Caro. Chuck was born August 2, 1930 in Detroit, the son of the late Charles & Kathleen (Butcher) Curtis. He grew up in the Detroit area where he met his childhood sweetheart at eleven years old, Mary Elizabeth Hillard. The couple fell in love and were united in marriage on March 25, 1948 and celebrated over seventy-three years of marriage before her death earlier this year. Chuck owned and operated an excavating and trucking business in the Detroit area for many years. In retirement, he purchased several mobile home parks in Michigan and Florida, including one in Caro where he moved in 1990. He was a collector at heart and especially enjoyed trains, antiques, Hop-along Cassidy and John Wayne items. Chuck purchased the old train depot in Ubly to create The Depot Restaurant in Caro, now Rails End. He will be remembered as a hard-working man, strong in stature and will. He was a Golden Glove Boxing Champion but held a soft spot in his heart for the underdog. Chuck is survived by three children, Gary Curtis, Judy Ann Scholtens, Mary Lou Smith; ten grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Chuck was preceded in death by a son, Charles R. Curtis; grandson, Chuckie; granddaughter, Julie; sister, Mickey Johnson; and brother, William “Duffy” Curtis. In keeping with Chuck's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering is being planned for a later date. Judy Ann would like to extend her heartfelt gratitude to Careys Young at Heart AFC in Caro for their loving and expert care over the last year. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.
