Charles Robinson Smiley

Charles Robinson Smiley of Unionville, age 90, was called home to the Lord on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at his home, with family by his side. He was born July 8, 1931 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the youngest child of Francis Wren and Margaret (Hazelwood) Smiley. He was united in marriage with Joan Lowthian on May 8, 1954 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Charles served four years in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the American Legion Post #421 in Unionville. He graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor's and Master's degree. He was employed at Unionville Sebewaing High School for over thirty years, retiring in 1993. Charles enjoyed hunting and fishing, woodworking, carving, gardening and cooking, as well as spending time with family and friends. Charles was a lifelong learner and loved to read. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Joan; his children, Lisa (Mike) West Fornwald of Antioch, Illinois, Lindy (David) Rix of Columbus, Indiana, Kevin (Kristin Nelson) Smiley of Saginaw; grandchildren, Dakota (Morgan), Dalton and Mickey West, Catie, Charlie and Tim Rix, Owen and Ian Smiley; and several nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, David and Billy Smiley; and a sister, Sara Crawford. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to honor his memory may make a contribution to ACW Ambulance, Compassus Hospice or the charity of their choice.
