Col. Fredrick J. Haase (Ret.) of Caro, age 97, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, April 18, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 31, 1915 in Toledo, Ohio, the son of the late Fredrick Henry and Ruth (Strabler) Haase. Fred was united in marriage with Alyce Dudek on January 10, 1942. He graduated from the University of Toledo with a BS Pharmaceutical Degree in 1939, and later earned his MBA in International Business at George Washington University in 1976. In his early years, Fred was employed by the Upjohn Company in Detroit from 1939 to 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 12, 1941. Following World War II, Fred continued his service with the Army for a total of twenty-eight years, retiring on Oct. 15, 1970. Fred was awarded the Meritorious Unit Citation at the Washington DC headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, where he served twenty-one years. Fred was the Health Manpower Officer in the Office of Emergency Preparedness from 1964 to 1970, then served until his retirement as Chairman of the Interagency Health, Medical and Human Services Emergency Preparedness Committee and was staff director of the presidentially appointed National Health Resources Advisory Committee. He was a life member of the Capitol Hill Club, the American Forestry Association, the American Horticultural Society, a member of the Association of Military Surgeons, and the National Defense Executive Reserve. Upon Fred and Alyce's return to Caro in the early 1980's, they were active members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro, and he was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Caro Council #3224, a Life Member of the Caro VFW Post #4164 and Caro American Legion Post #7, and the Tuscola County Polish American Club. Fred was also a generous donator to the Caro Community Hospital, the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility and the Caro High School Scholarship Fund. He had a real interest in nature and its conservation and planted over 50,000 trees on his property. Fred is survived by his wife of seventy-one years, Alyce; three children and their spouses, Fredrick James & Norma Haase of Lansing, Patricia Malamut of Lisle, Illinois, Robert Haase and his fianc, Lori Curtis of Caro; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by one brother, William Haase. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro with Rev. Dennis Kucharczyk officiating. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Caro with military honors afforded by the Caro V.F.W. Post #4164 and the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. A Rosary Service led by the Knights of Columbus Caro Council 3224 will be recited at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
