Cora Estelle Layer

Cora E. Layer of Millington, formerly of Caro, age 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at her daughter's home in Millington. Cora was born September 8, 1919 in Midland County, the daughter of the late Herbert and Rachel (Gerard) Smith. She was united in marriage with the late Maurice Layer on July 31, 1937 at the home of Quinton and Alice Howell in Reese. He preceded Cora in death on May 2, 1990. Cora was a homemaker and her life revolved around her family and children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to play the piano and was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church in Saginaw and also a former member of Wahjamega Country Church. She displayed a special gift of hospitality that shone even during these last few months with her caregivers. No one could ever visit Cora without her making sure they were fed or at least had some type of "goodie" before leaving. Cora is survived by three children and their spouses, Lois & Wayne Goss of Millington, David & Kathryn Layer of Saginaw, Rachel & Joseph Orange of Hemlock; daughter-in-law, Lyllian Layer of Prescott; sixteen grandchildren; forty-seven great-grandchildren; and fifteen great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, one brother and their spouses, Betty Vance of Montrose, Hazel & Ronald Spencer of Harrison, Roy & Gayle Smith of Washington. In addition to her husband, Maurice, Cora was preceded in death by two children, Elden Layer and Janet Peters; and six brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the Fostoria Baptist Church, 8933 Fostoria Road, Fostoria, MI with Pastor Steven Henry officiating, assisted by two of Cora's grandsons, Pastors Benjamin and Casey Layer. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at a later time in Almer Township Cemetery.
