Dale Edward Mertz of Akron, Michigan, formerly of North Olmsted, Ohio, age 85, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 24, 2020 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community in Caro, surrounded by his loving family. Dale was born May 29, 1935 in Saginaw, the son of the late Arthur and Clara (Kern) Mertz and was a 1953 graduate of Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw. In 1956, while looking out the window of his fraternity at Valparaiso University in Indiana, he happened to notice a young lady raking leaves in a purple jacket. His words were "I want to meet that girl." On June 13, 1959 he married "that girl," the former Marjorie Paetz, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dale was vice-president of National Bias Fabric Company in Cleveland, Ohio for twenty-eight years. He was involved in various ministries at Christ the King Vineyard Church in North Olmsted, Ohio, and after moving to Michigan he became a member of Colwood United Brethren Church. Dale was an avid golfer, enjoying time spent with his grandchildren golfing, and closely followed the Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers. Dale is survived by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Marjorie Mertz of Akron; three children and their spouses, David & Deena Mertz of Aurora, Illinois, Linda & Rod Houthoofd of Akron, Phillip & Sonya Mertz of North Ridgeville, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Alex Sherman and wife, Alise, Kyra Borchers and fianc, Thomas DaSilva, Lanie Patterson and husband, Carl, Daniel Houthoofd and fianc, Jenna Prill, Karen Houthoofd, Ryan Mertz, and Ava Mertz; one great-granddaughter, Avalynn Sherman; three sisters-in-law, Ann Mertz, Judith Mertz and Diane Paetz; several nieces and nephews; as well as many special family friends in Ohio. In addition to his parents, Dale was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Mertz and Dr. Donald Mertz; and one brother-in-law, Frederic Paetz. A Homegoing Service will be held at the Colwood United Brethren Church in Caro at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2020 with Pastor Randy Carpenter officiating. Due to COVID-19 regulations, face masks will be required by those medically able to wear them and social distancing will be observed. Burial will follow at a later time at Wisner Township Cemetery.
