Darrell R. Hornbacher of Caro, age 84, passed away at his home on his birthday, Saturday, December 16, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Darrell was born December 16, 1933 in Unionville, the son of the late Bernard and Hazel (Rieck) Hornbacher. He served in the U. S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict, and on August 30, 1958 he was united in marriage with the former Nancy LaDouce at St Agatha Catholic Church in Gagetown. Darrell was a graduate of Green's Barber College in Detroit and worked as a barber in Mt. Clemens prior to purchasing and operating Darrell's Barber Shop in Utica. In December of 1969, Darrell and Nancy moved to Caro and became the owners of D & N Rainbow Laundry. Darrell was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Caro Council #3224. He loved thoroughbred horse racing, but would settle for harness racing when necessary. Darrell was an avid Detroit Tigers fan, loved playing blooper ball with the Knights of Columbus and attending Little League games when possible. Darrell is survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Nancy; five children and their spouses, Darrell II & Blair of Arizona, Dean & Lesa of Caro, Duane & Dawn of Caro, Valerie & Bruce Schefka of Imlay City, Douglas & Angie of Caro: sixteen grandchildren, Darrell III, Cristy, Todd, Morgan, Brennan, Ashley, Breanna, Emily, Joey, Hallie, Samantha, Abby, Jenna, Macie, Nolan and Ellie; seven great-grandchildren, Landon, Caden, Barrett, Kyriella, Arabella, Nella and Opal; and one sister, Darlene Shope of Rapid River. In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by three siblings, Shirley Market, Herschel and Eugene Hornbacher. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at St. Christopher Parish, Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Jerzy Dobosz officiating. Military honors will follow the service and will be provided by the U. S. Army and Caro American Legion Post # 7. Burial will follow at a later time at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Caro. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
