David Coon

David Coon of Caro, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 5, 2020. Dave was born May 29, 1937 in Detroit, the son of the late Cecil & Reta (Graham) Coon. He grew up in Fraser and graduated from Fraser High School with the class of 1956. Shortly after, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served stateside in the motorcade division, arranging for the transportation of dignitaries, weapons and equipment. Dave would reminisce that he served on the same base as Elvis Presley but was never impressed with his work ethic. He was honorably discharged in 1959 and returned to drive truck for Weldment - Pacific, a job he held before his time in the service. He was united in marriage with the former Maryann Cramer on March 23, 1963 in Fairgrove, and the couple has cherished more than fifty-seven years together. In 1965, Dave purchased Caro Products, an automotive metal fabrication factory, and also served as a charter fishing captain. In 1984, Dave was deputized by Sheriff Paul Berry and began a career with the department that included marine safety, prisoner transport, marine patrol, corrections, and courthouse security. He insisted on treating everyone under his watch with respect and dignity, traits remembered by colleagues and inmates alike. Dave was a member of the Caro Lions Club, Mt. Moriah Lodge #226 F. & A.M., and the Caro Moose Lodge. He was a consummate outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. Never one to quit working, he could often be found mowing endless acres of grass and tending to his garden. He was happiest, however, spending time with his grandkids. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Maryann Coon of Caro; three children and their spouses, Lynette Coon of Ubly, Lana & Mike Mitin of Frankenmuth, Payton & Paula Coon of Caro; five grandchildren and their spouses, Cortney & Shawn Everitt of Bay City, Amanda & Tyler Rupprecht of Vassar, Wyatt Mitin of Frankenmuth, Kirstie Rushing of Saginaw, Tyler Rushing of Caro; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cheryle Newman of Florida, Judy & Ron Foley of Florida; many nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his brother, Cecil Coon.
