David “Dave” Ronald Hogan, age 73, of Caro, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 6, 2026, while at home. Dave was born on April 19, 1952, in Port Austin, the son of the late David “Bud” and Irene (Curtis) Hogan. He graduated from Port Austin High School with the class of 1971. In 1978 he met Penny Szymanski and they married in August of 1979 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
He spent his younger years on the beaches of Port Austin, a place he loved and returned to throughout his life. Once an avid collector of Port Austin postcards, he was even pictured in some of them in his youth.
Dave worked at the Caro Center as an LPN for nearly 30 years. After retiring in the 2002, Dave worked at VG’s Grocery, where he enjoyed meeting new people and helping customers. He made many new friends there. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Caro.
Dave liked games like backgammon, euchre, and chess and enjoyed being “one of the boys,” with his sons and their friends.
He loved going on walks, and was an avid reader with a particular interest in Stoicism and writings of Marcus Aurelius. He also enjoyed history and historical drama. Dave enjoyed British detective shows like Midsomer Murders, Vera and Inspector Morse, appreciating their clever storytelling and rich characters.
Family meant everything to him, and he cherished every moment he was able to spend with them. Whether it was sharing stories or laughter, he found great joy in staying close and connected.
Left to cherish Dave’s memory are his wife of forty-six years, Penny Hogan; four children, Amber (Max Vincent) Messmann, Matthew (Rhiannon) Hogan, Mark (Sarah) Hogan, and Christian (Em) Quiver; grandchildren, Keagan Messmann, Riley Messmann, Judah Hogan, Isla Hogan, Finn Quiver, "babygirl" Quiver is scheduled to arrive in June; siblings, Sandy (John) Schmitt, Jane Schaal, and Andrew (Tauni) Hogan. In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by his brother, James Hogan.
Dave’s memorial service will be on Friday, May 8, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Christopher Parish, Sacred Heart Church, in Caro with Rev. Isaac Madanu officiating. Dave’s family will be present to receive friends on Thursday at the Ransford Funeral Home in Caro from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the wishes of the family, c/o Penny Hogan, 205 West Sherman Street, Caro, MI 48723.
