David William Preston

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear cousin and friend, David William Preston. He passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on February 22, 2026, while vacationing in Florida with his closest friend, Joe Pape.

Born on October 4, 1947, David was the devoted nephew of Melba Hall (who raised him) and beloved son of the late William Preston and Mildred Locke. Survived by cousins Denise (David) Sokol and children/grandchildren, Brian (Lilah) Rippett, Robin (Mark) Rola and children/grandchild, Colin (Cara) Rippett, Kim (Gary) Regener and children/grandchild. Also survived by his closest friends and adopted family, Joe Pape, David (Jill) Pape and children/grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian) Stefanovsky and children/grandchildren.

David was a proud graduate of Michigan State University and a beloved teacher for Caro Community Schools for over thirty years. He was a valued and integral member of the Caro community and school district, Mayville Hilltop Community Church, and Wells Township, holding many positions throughout the community. David was the family historian, a world traveler, trivia master, and the kindest, most genuine person you will ever meet. His wit and humor were unmatched, and along with his outgoing spirit, he made lasting connections with everyone he met. If you knew him, you’ll remember his laugh. He laughed heartily and often. He left us too soon and will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched.

Please join us for a celebration of his life on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at Mayville Hilltop Community Church, 601 E. Ohmer, Mayville 48744. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a church service at 2:00 p.m. and luncheon immediately following at the church. In lieu of flowers, David requested that donations be made in his memory to Mayville Hilltop Community Church Mission Team.
