Dolaura E. "Dee" Touma of Caro, age 80, passed away on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at Ascension St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. Dee was born January 5, 1941 in Flint, the daughter of the late George & Florence (Vermylia) Thornberry. She graduated from high school in Flint with the class of 1959 where she was captain of the cheerleading squad and homecoming queen. Following graduation, she began the nursing program at McLaren Hospital in Flint to become an RN, and later attended Michigan State University to continue her education. Her first position as an RN was at Flint Osteopathic Hospital. While in charge of an operating room there, her eye caught a young surgical resident, Dr. Richard Touma. The couple was married soon after on October 16, 1965 in Flint and have been inseparable for fifty-five years. Dee worked in public health in Flint for several years while Dick finished his residency, and in 1968 moved to Caro. In her early years here, she raised her young family and worked at the Caro Area District Library. She later returned to nursing with Heartland Home Health Care, a position she held for fifteen years. The last ten years of Dee's career were spent with her husband at the Caro Medical Clinic, retiring in 2006. Dee was an active member of the Caro First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She lived for time spent with her family and was always open to a new adventure that led the family across the country throughout the years. She was an avid golfer and skier and represented Caro in the first Car-Mar Games in tennis and couple's volleyball. Left to cherish Dee's memory are her loving husband, Dr. Richard Touma of Caro; two children and their spouses, Michael & Lauren Touma of Clearwater, Florida, Laura & George Craig of South Solon, Ohio; fourteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Georgina Borg and her husband, John, of Flint, Judy Fuson of Kissimmee, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
