Donald W. Beers, age 81, of Sebewaing, passed away Thursday, September 7, 2017, at Covenant Healthcare in Saginaw following complications from surgery after many years of heart disease.
Don was born in Detroit on October 11, 1935, to Harold Ford and Selma Clara "Sally" (Schweitzer) Beers. He married his childhood sweetheart, Janet Kaye Lovelace on February 25, 1956, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He worked for Ford Beers Sales from 8 th grade until 1976, then for the new owners for 2 years. Don then decided to open Don's Body Shop/D & B Towing which he owned and operated for 20 years. He was a volunteer on the Sebewaing Ambulance for 6 years and a fireman with the Sebewaing Fire Dept. for 30 years. He was active with the JC's (Junior Chamber of Commerce) for 10 years, USA Board of Education for 12 years, Village Council Trustee from 1986-2016, and the Village Softball Leagues from 8 th grade until the age of 40. Don also enjoyed fundraising for the American Cancer Society (Relay for Life). He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Don was also a member of Thumb Area Antique Auto Association and Sebewaing Historical Society.
Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janet; children: daughter, Bobbe Joy (Robert House) Riskey and her children: Casey (Jessica), Erin, Allison and Becca Riskey and great grandchildren Devin, Hannah and Benjamin Riskey, Dayton Sanchez; daughter, Brenda Lee (Alan) Kretzschmer and her children: Karen (Don) Dorsch, Kendall Kretzschmer; daughter, Judi Kaye (Maxwell) Garnett and her children: Mario (Sandra) Garnett, and great grandchildren, Keigan, Kyler, Addalyn and Aubree Garnett ; Matthew (Jessica) Garnett and great grandson, Aidan; daughter: Salli Marie (Alan Ziegler) Vermeersch and her children: Katie (Daniel) Vader and great grandchildren: Thomas, Wesley, Malcolm, and Juliet Vader, Andrea and Janel Vermeersch; and brother, Warren (Mary) Beers of Sebewaing.
Preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Kelly Vermeersch; and 2 infant great grandchildren: Janet and Waylon Garnett.
Per Don's wishes cremation has taken place.
A memorial visitation is planned for Friday, September 29, 2017, at Juengel & Mellendorf Funeral Home in Sebewaing from 2-8pm.
The memorial service will be Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Visitation will begin at 10am until the time of service at 11am.
Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Sebewaing.
Memorial donations may be given to the American Heart Association, Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Sebewaing Area Historical Society.
