Donald L. Bigelow, age 88, of Caro, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility. He was born on July 31, 1921 in Fowlerville to the late Wilbur and Marion (Fenn) Bigelow. A high school graduate, Don was inducted into the Army of the United States on August 15, 1941 and served honorably until his discharge on September 10, 1945. EC5 Bigelow served with Company A 348TH Engineer Combat Battalion in the following battles and campaigns; Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes Central Europe. Don was very proud of his military service and always held military service in high regard. In civilian life, he continued to use his military “MOS” as an over the road truck driver for Associated Truck Lines. Mr. Bigelow spent many years living in Lapeer and ventured from there in 1968 to live at Fish Point, then in Florida, and finally moving to Caro. Don was a member of the Lutheran faith and a life member of American Legion Post #16 and V.F.W. Post #4139 in Lapeer. He is survived by his three children and their mother, Michael (Kathleen) Bigelow of Crystal Falls, Patti Bigelow of Caro, Lynda Bigelow of Ellsworth and Ethelyn Bigelow of Caro; three grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; his sisters, Beverly Smiley of Lake Orion and Phyllis Bock of Ann Arbor; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern Bigelow; a brother, Hollie Bigelow; and a sister, Iris Carls. There will be no public services held for Mr. Bigelow, consistent with his wishes. Cremation will take place and burial will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. There will be no visitation or services at the Collon Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to your local veterans organization in Dons name.
