Donald Ewald

Donald Ewald of Unionville, age 92, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at Heritage Hill Assisted Living in Caro just hours before his seventy-second wedding anniversary. Don was born April 2, 1923, in Unionville, the son of the late Joseph & Clara (Franz) Ewald. He was united in marriage with the former Emma Fischer on November 6, 1943 in Sebewaing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. A lifelong area farmer, Don also served as a bulk mail hauler for the United States Postal Service. He will be remembered as a self-sufficient man, committed to his family and farm. Don was an avid card player with family and friends and at the Caro Moose Lodge of which he was a member for many years. While wintering in Florida, in addition to playing cards, he enjoyed shuffleboard. When his health prohibited him from driving tractor on the farm, he could still be found on his lawnmower or tinkering with odd-jobs around their home. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Emma Ewald of Unionville; one daughter, Kay Montei and her fianc, Bill Jordan, of Bay City; four grandchildren and their spouses, Michele & Jerry Ringle of Riverdale, James Ward of Unionville, Katherine Montei & Kyle Manke of Oxford, Charles & Carolyn Montei of Lansing; two great-grandchildren, Kayla Gates and Averie Manke; and one sister, Betty Eckfeld of Unionville. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by two children, infant Donald Lee Ewald and Sheryl Ann Ward; and one brother, Edward Ewald. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 9, 2015, at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Rev. Michele Hile officiating. Burial will follow at a later time at Columbia Township Cemetery on Graf Road in Unionville. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to Tuscola County Imagination Library or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
