Donald L. Patterson

Donald L. Patterson, age 77, of Bad Axe passed away April 2, 2014 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe under hospice care surrounded by his family.

He was born March 9, 1937 in Bad Axe to the late Donald D.and Helen K. (Rankin) Patterson.

Donald served in the United States Navy, as a boilerman, from 1955 to 1959. He worked in the DPW for the Villages of Pigeon and Elkton and as a Huron County Sheriff deputy for a short time; he also worked at Active Industries in the plumbing department. In 1968, he joined the family business at Sunny Acres Nursing Center near Bad Axe. He attended Michigan State University to obtain his Nursing Home Administrators license. He also owned and operated a backhoe business for several years.

Don was a certified scuba diver and on occasion assisted the Sheriffs Department scuba dive recovery team. He was a member of the Bad Axe 1 st Presbyterian Church. He had many hobbies that occupied his time including: hunting, fishing, building and shooting muzzle loaders. He also competed in many muzzle loading shoots. He spent time hiking in the woods, bird watching, enjoying nature at the family cabin, reading and loved studying his bible.

Donald and Patricia Schultz were married in 1957 at the Bad Axe 1 st Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his wife Pat, two children: Tammy Elenbaum and special friend, Jim Koroleski of Caseville; and Michael (Gina) Patterson of Bad Axe. Four grandchildren, Travis (Crystal) Elenbaum of Owendale, Joshua Elenbaum( Kayla Christner) of Owendale, Ethan and Nicole Patterson of Bad Axe; and 5 Great-grandchildren, Blain, Alivia, Devin, McKenna and Mariah. His sister-in-law and brother-in-law Kay and James McCormick of Clearwater, Florida and nieces and nephews: Mark (Radene) Kumaus of Ubly, Kathy Kumaus of Greensboro, North Carolina, Dr. Robert (Dr. Laura) McCormick of Harrisburg, VA, and Laura McCormick of Hesperia, California. Don was preceded in death by his parents Donald D. & Helen K. Patterson, a sister and brother-in-law Marjorie & Edward Kumaus, a grandson, Brandon Elenbaum, and his in-laws Munro & Helen Schultz.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 5 at Bad Axe 1 st Presbyterian Church. Pastor Elliott Pinegar will officiate with burial in Colfax Twp. Cemetery. Visitation will be at Champagne Funeral Home in Elkton from 3 to 8 PM Friday and at the church after 10 AM Saturday. Memorials may be made to the Bad Axe 1 st Presbyterian Church or to the family discretionary fund
