Donald W. Schafer, 88, of Elkton, died Monday, May 21, 2018 at his home.
Donald was born January 11, 1930 in Oliver Township to the late Norman and Verda (Rothfuss) Schafer. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1948. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. He married Elaine Hill at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe on May 7, 1955; she preceded him in death on February 15, 2015. He retired from Active Industries in 1995 after 41 years of employment. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as custodian for over 50 years. He enjoyed doing magic tricks and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his children Deborah (David) Jaworski of Bad Axe, Dianne of Elkton, Don (Patty) of Mount Pleasant, and Dawn (Jeffrey) Schmidt of Pigeon; grandchildren Kelly (Ryan), Chad (Kelly), Adam (Michaela), Samantha (Matthew), Garrett (Abby), Grant, Alex, Noah, Kimberly, Janelle, Garrett, and Mason; great grandchildren Alex and Alexia; brother Robert (Shelia) of Elkton; sister-in-law Shirley Hill of Caseville; many nieces and nephews and his canine companion Trixie. He was preceded in death by his son David.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm Thursday, May 24 th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkton. Burial with military honors will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be 2-8 Wednesday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
