Donald P. Welshans age 85, of Sand Point died Sunday morning, July 10, at his home while under hospice care.

He was born August 27, 1930, in Toledo, OH to the late Raymond and Helen (Hamf) Welshans. Shortly after his mother died, when he was five, his family moved to Canada and at age 16, they came to Michigan.

Don opted not to finish high school, because when he turned 17, he enlisted in the US Army and served in occupied Japan. When the war in Korea broke out, he was transferred there and returned state side in August of 1951.

On October 24, 1952, he was united in marriage to Louise Waldo in Angola, IN. The couple moved to Huron County, where Don was employed at Pigeon Manufacturing, retiring in 1995 as plant manager, with over 35 years of service. During his retirement years, Don worked part time at the Caseville True Value Hardware Store until 2006, when his health prevented it.

He was an avid golfer and served as president of the Scenic Golf and Country Club for 8 years. He enjoyed gardening and was a life member of VFW Post #1224, Hamburg, MI.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Louise; three daughters, Marilyn Welshans (Chuck) of Sebewaing, Patricia (John) Beeman of Chelsea and Paula (Tom) Jentz of Caseville; grandchildren, Tracey, Ryan, Michelle, John, Tiffany and Ashley; 12 great grandchildren; a brother, William (Doreen) Welshans of Southfield; his sister, Jean Bailey of Winsor, Canada and sister-in-law, Viola Welshans .

Preceding him in death was a brother, Ray Welshans and his step-mother, Viola Welshans.

His family is abiding with his wishes that there be no public service and thanks you for the care and concern you have given the past few years.
