Douglas Hugh Herringshaw, age 74, said goodbye to his earthly dwelling on March 4, 2022, after a long fight with multiple ailments. He was resting comfortably at home and was surrounded by family as he made his journey to his heavenly home. Doug is survived by his siblings, Karen Spiess and Cheryl Zielinski; his children, Christopher (Samantha) Herringshaw, Heather Baker, and Tobin (Amy) Herringshaw; beloved niece, Ashley (Nick), and nephew Josh (Amy); and many grandchildren. Doug is preceded in death by his wife, Susan Herringshaw; his parents, Tobias and Margaret Herringshaw; his sister, Janice Gardner; and his step-son, Michael Hutchinson. Doug was a loving father, husband, grandpa, brother, and uncle. He valued family, generosity, sound business, and a good set of golf clubs. He knew the value of hard work and passed along his wisdom to those around him with the tenacity and dedication he displayed toward finding success in this life. Doug was a happy child growing up and an athlete in high school, running on the track team for DeVilbiss High School in Toledo, Ohio. He ran the best time in the district his junior year and helped win the Toledo City Cross Country League two years in a row. Doug attended the University of Kentucky and eventually earned his degree from Lindsay Wilson College. In 1969 he began working as a driver at the National Bank of Detroit, running papers between branches. He surprised his friends when he earned a promotion to assistant manager by wearing a suit to the interview. The lead teller at the branch, Karen Altman, began training him, and they soon started to date. Not long after they were married and began raising three successful children. Doug and Karen decided to move north to Mancelona while Doug worked at the Antrim County State Bank. Doug then applied to a position at Chemical Bank where he would have a 30-year career. He wanted to be president of the bank someday, and in 1996, he reached his goal as the president of the Thumb area Chemical Bank. Doug met Susan Hutchinson first as a golf buddy but eventually recognized her as his soulmate. The two were married in 1997 and found happiness in golf outings, traveling, playing cards with friends, and relaxing on Florida beaches where they found the best cocktails to enjoy. He was never apart from Susan and the two of them enjoyed their retirements and spending time with their many grandchildren. Doug was a life-long Michigan fan, which often made it challenging for Susan who was a devoted Michigan State fan. Doug was a recipient of a kidney transplant, thanks to his loving sister, Cheryl. The operation gave him many years of extra life. Doug's wishes are that everyone considers becoming a life-saving organ donor. In lieu of flowers and gifts, Doug would prefer that donations be made to the National Down Syndrome Society at https://www.ndss.org/.
