Earl F. Mattlin, Jr., age 86 years, of Frankenmuth, formerly of Caro, passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at Covenant Health Care in Saginaw. He was born on August 14, 1922 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Earl and Grace (Volker) Mattlin. Earl moved to Caro from Monroe in the late 1930s and was a 1940 graduate of Caro High School. Earl Mattlin, Jr. and the former Evelyn Martin were united in marriage on October 23, 1944 in Springfield, Illinois. She preceded him in death on June 21, 1996. He then married the former Zoe Winston on June 27, 1997 at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Bridgeport. Earl retired from the Caro Regional Center after more than thirty years of service as Storekeeper Supervisor. During that employment and following it, he worked as a Tuscola County Sheriffs Deputy for twenty-five years. Earl was proud to have served as Cubmaster and later as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop #170 and was presented the Scouters Key. He was a member of James J. Epskamp Lodge #148 Fraternal Order of Police, serving many years as treasurer and as a member of the Scholarship Committee. He was presented with an appreciation plaque by the Lodge. Earl was a life member (fifty years) of Mt. Moriah Lodge #226 F&AM and also a life member of the Bay City Scottish Rite. He was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Bridgeport having served as a vestry member and usher. In past years, he enjoyed bowling, dancing, and traveling extensively throughout the United States and Europe. The Mattlins enjoyed their involvement in Frankenmuth activities. He is survived by his wife, Zoe Mattlin of Frankenmuth; two sons, David (Diana) Mattlin of Caro and Martin (Patricia) Mattlin of Frankenmuth; five grandchildren, Kim (Rick) Odorico of Vassar, Michael (Cheryl) Mattlin of Caro, Jennifer Mattlin of Lansing, Sean (Kelly) Gallagher of Farmington Hills and Ryan Gallagher of Chicago, Illinois; three great-grandchildren, Emma and Alex Odorico of Vassar and Jodi (Adam) Fetting of Caro; one great-great-grandson, Coby Fetting of Caro; his extended family, James (Joanne) Keefer of Plymouth, Linda (Don) Rogers of Melbourne, Florida, Karen Keefer Kmiecik and husband, Greg, of Alexandria, Virginia, Kathryn Keefer Muchler and husband, Mark, of Royal Oak; one sister, Virginia (Edward) Moffat of Ocala, Florida; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Earl Mattlin III; and one sister, Margaret Kressbach. The funeral service will be held at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Following cremation, burial will be at Indianfields Township Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Collon Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. There will be a Masonic memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Lions Club of Frankenmuth.
