Hans Edward Galka, age 90, of Caro, passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at Tuscola County Medical Care Facility. He was born on October 11, 1919 in Germany to the late John and Augusta (Malonek) Galka. Edward came to the United States at the age of three. His father had preceded the remainder of the family and they settled in the coal mining region of Ohio. The family came to Detroit when he was a child and Edward went on to graduate high school in Detroit. He served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Army during WWII as both a radioman and boiler operator. Upon his return he was a partner with his brother-in-law in a service station in Taylor. He met and married the former Betty Anderson on August 2, 1952 in Detroit. He continued to operate service stations in Taylor and Allen Park before going to work at Heathkit. Until his retirement he was a boilermaker, holding a second class steam license at St. Marys Hospital in Livonia. In 1996 the Galkas moved to Caro and have resided there since. He attended the Living Waters Chapel in Caro. Edward enjoyed electronics as a hobby. . He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Betty; two children, Carol (George) Agnew of Caro, and William (Patricia) Galka of Caro; one grandchild, Jade Galka of Caro; three sisters, Charlotte Dodds of Maybee, Ruth Benton Short of Garden City, and Esther (Karl) Stein of Allen Park; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Roble. The funeral service will be held at Michigan Memorial Funeral Home in Flat Rock on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor James Solomon officiating. Burial will be at Michigan Memorial Park, Flat Rock. Visitation will be held at the Collon Funeral Home on Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. with Pastor James Solomon officiating. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Tuscola County.
