Elizabeth Mae "Susie" Dewald

Elizabeth M. "Susie" Dewald of Akron, age 100, passed away on May 27, 2022 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community of Caro. Susie was born May 13, 1922 in Akron, the daughter of the late Theron and Emma (Zimmer) Steele, and was a member of the final graduating class of Akron High School in 1940. Susie was a dedicated member of New Salem Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. She was united in marriage with Jacob Dewald, Jr. on November 27, 1948, and he preceded her in death on May 26, 2003. They spent fifty-four years together and traveled many states in the U.S. Susie spent her working years at many businesses in Akron: Severance Grocery & Gas Station, Briggs Furniture Store, R & S Fertilizer Plant, and was the chief operator at Michigan Bell Telephone. Susie enjoyed playing cards, bowling, playing the organ, knitting, and crocheting. She was a wonderful artist and enjoyed sharing her crafts with friends and family. She also had quite the "green thumb" and enjoyed spending time tending to her flower garden. Susie always wanted someone in the family to make it to 100, she made it to 100 plus two weeks! Susie is survived by three sisters, Emma Jean Roller, Joyce McCann, and Joann Van Every; three sisters-in-law, Pat Steele, Geraldine Dewald, and Barbara Dewald; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles "Chiz" Steele and Glen "Fats" Steele. In keeping with Susie's wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside committal service will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Demorest Cemetery in Akron with Rev. William Mayhew officiating.
