Elizabeth “Betty” Smelts, 94, of Pigeon died Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Scheurer Hospital Long Term.
Betty was born May 15, 1923 in Fisher Branch, Manitoba, Canada to the late Samuel and Mary (Semeniuk) Hnatiuk. She moved to Michigan when she was a month old. She attended Elkton Schools. On June 15, 1946 she married James Smelts in Bad Axe; he preceded her in death in 1993. She lived most of her life in Fowlerville, then to Prescott, Arizona, before moving to Caro in 1989. After her husband’s death she moved to Country Bay in Pigeon before her failing health required a move to Long Term Care. There she enjoyed coloring and games, especially BINGO.
Betty is survived by her sister Mary Ruth Hirak of Vermont and brother Michael (Gayle) Hnatiuk of Sanford; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters: Jeanette, Sylvia, Alice, Mildred and Lillian; and brothers: Walter, William, Andrew, Milton and Daniel.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Thursday, August 17th at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton with Rev. Tim Loehrke officiating. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care.
