Elmer R. Herman, age 83, long time Elkton area farmer, died Monday morning, June 6, at Huron Medical center following a massive heart attack.
He was born September 14, 1921 in Bad Axe to the late Rev. Allen and Mabel (DeGroat) Herman. A short time later his father was transferred to Washington State to serve at a church there. In 1933, the family moved back to Huron County where they bought a farm in Chandler Twp.
On December 3, 1949, he was united in marriage to Eileen M. Weidman at her parent's home in Winsor Twp. They took over the operation of the family farm, retiring in 1989. While farming Elmer was also and agent for the Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company until the company left the state.
He was a member of the Elkton Missionary Church where he had served in many capacities. He also sang in the church quartet and choir for many years and had served as Chandler Twp. Treasurer for over a decade.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Eileen; eight children, Marie (Roland) Bowen of Glenshaw, PA, Rev. Barbara (Jeff) Coalter of Snowhill, MD, Alan (Linda) Herman of Filion, Diane (Steve) Gundersen of Bellevue, WA, George (Julie) Herman of Linwood, WA, Glen (Kathy) Herman of Clinton Twp, Emily (Steve) Turner of Pigeon and Hope (David) Kosier of Waldorf, MD; seventeen grandchildren, Dr. Michael (Sara), Sean and Derek Bowen, Tara and Brooke Coalter, Justin, Joshua (Melissa) and Jordan Herman, Riley Gundersen, Grant and Rhiana Herman, Holly, Tiffany and Nicole Herman, Jesse, Alex and Eric Turner and a great grandson, Ethan Herman. Also surviving are his sisters, Della Trudgen of Pigeon, Lillian (Willard) Williams of Yale, Suzanne Schember of Pigeon and Mabel Herman of Owendale; a brother, Paul Herman of Pigeon; sisters-in-law, Genevieve Herman of Farmington Hills and Doris Herman of Cass City. Preceding him in death were his brothers, Gilbert and Donald Herman and brothers-in-law, Harold Trudgen and Olin Schember.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, June 9, at the Elkton Missionary Church. Rev. Reggie Courless, pastor will officiate with burial in Chandler Twp. Cemetery.
Friends may call at he Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton from 2 to 9 PM Wednesday and at the church after 10:00 AM Thursday.
Memorials may be given to the church or the donor's choice.
