Esther Smith

Esther St. Mary Smith, age 97, formerly of Caro, died on Friday, July 16, 2010 at St. Francis Home in Saginaw. Esther St. Mary was born on March 18, 1913 in Detroit to the late Joseph and Harriet (Barns) St. Mary and came to Caro as a baby. She was a 1933 Caro High School graduate, and on April 14, 1937 she married Charles Smith. He preceded her in death on October 14, 1975. Esther spent her working life as an employee of the Caro State Hospital, working as a cook, seamstress, and in patient care. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Caro. Esther enjoyed traveling whenever she had the opportunity. She and her friends have always enjoyed social outings and were often on the road. She is survived by a nephew and niece, Charles Smith of Lansing and Sue (Dennis) Bruno of St. Charles; five great-nieces, Tracy Bruno and her life partner Mary Vrana of Oswego, New York, Jennifer Smith of Grand Rapids, Tammy Bruno and Tyler Miller of Hemlock, Tera (Mitch) Lukhaart of Grand Rapids, Angie (Jayson) Irish of Midland; four great-great-nephews and one great-great- niece, Zachary and Justin Carter, Aiden and Madeline Lukhaart and Devon Benson; and a very special friend, Miriam Deming of Mayville. The funeral service will be held at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be at Indianfields Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Collon Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until the time of service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice or St. Francis Home.
