Eugene S. Salgat, age 56 years, of Fargo North Dakota, formerly of Caro, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2008 at Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw. He was born on September 6, 1951 in Bay City to the late Samuel and Arlene (Freeman) Salgat. Eugene was a 1969 Caro High School graduate. He served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army Infantry and later served in the U.S. Navy. Eugene was an accomplished artist as well as an art collector. In addition to his love for the arts and the music of his Native American culture, he also enjoyed fishing and his family. He is a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Heather Kinney of Frankenmuth; his grandchildren, Ethan and Olivia Kinney; his siblings, Michael Salgat of Fairgrove, James (Charlene) Trisch of Pickford and Sandra Smith of Mt. Pleasant; an aunt, Madeline Martin of Caro; a good friend, Frank Hunkler of Moorehead, Minnesota; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ann Allison; two nephews, Scott and Jeff Salgat; as well as the remainder of his aunts and uncles. The funeral service will be held at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday with Rev. Devin Chisholm of the Sagining Indian Church and Milton “Beaver” Pelcher of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe officiating. Burial will be at Ellington Township Cemetery, with military honors afforded by the Anishinabe Ogitchidaw Veterans and Warrior Society. Visitation will be at the Collon Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m until 9:00 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:00 am until time of service. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
