Evelyn F. Gross, age 90, of Chandler Twp. died Saturday evening, January 5, at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe.
She was born September 15, 1917 at the home of her parents the late John and Ella (Hebert) Champagne in Chandler Twp.
Evelyn graduated from Pinnebog High School in 1936 as valedictorian and lived in Chandler Twp all her life. On November 28, 1936, she was united in marriage to Carl Gross at St. Felix Catholic Church. He preceded her in death February 4, 2000.
After raising her eleven children, Evelyn was employed as a cook for Laker Schools several years. Later she started her own bakery in her home, baking cookies, pies, breads, decorated cakes and other goodies, selling them in the Elkton area, where she was known as the cookie lady.
Evelyn was a life long member of St. Felix Catholic Church, Altar Society and sang in the church choir, she also taught religious education for many years. She had been a 4-H leader for over 30 years, and enjoyed traveling all over the US and Europe to visit family.
Surviving are nine children, Carl (Ann) Gross of Middle Barton, England, John Gross of Cloverdale, CA, Larry (Sally) Gross and Rosemarie Cregeur of Chandler Twp., Robert (Pat) Gross of Ellensburg, WA, Ron (Patti) Gross of White Rock, Dennis (Yvonne) Gross of Warminster, England, Willard (Peg) Gross and Allen (Sharon) Gross both of Chandler Twp. Also surviving are 32 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and her sister, Leone Holodnick of Chandler Twp.
Preceding her in death was a son, Walter Gross; a daughter, Diane Krabbe; a granddaughter, Heather Gross; four brothers, Albert, Clarence, Hebert and John Champagne and two sisters, Bernice Bushey and Patricia Schram Vandeputte.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 AM Saturday at St Felix Catholic Church, Pinnebog. A rosary service will be conducted 7:00 PM at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton, where friends may call from 7 to 9 PM Thursday, 2 to 9 PM Friday and at the church after 10 AM Saturday. Memorials may be given to St. Felix.
