Evelyn L. Haley, age 87, of Grant Twp., died Tuesday afternoon, July 3, at the Huron County Medical Care Facility.
She was born September 28, 1919 at the home of her parents the late Alfred and Lydia (Staehli) Schember in Oliver Twp.
On March 11, 1939, she was united in marriage to Aaron L. Haley at the Elkton Missionary parsonage. They and raised their family in Grant Twp. Evelyn lost Aaron to a heart attack on January 14, 1973.
Evelyn enjoyed working with special needs children as a foster grandmother; some called her Gammie, Gamma or Gram. She loved all of them and tried very hard to make them feel needed and loved. She was also known as Ma Haley to many other people, and just had that mother hen attraction about her.
Evelyn was very active in the Owendale Community of Christ Church, serving as secretary and book steward for many years, in Bible School, she was known as the Cookie Lady.
Surviving are seven sons, Ervin (Ginnie) Haley of Sebewaing, Ivan Haley (his friend, Charlene Keilor) of Cass City, Ernest (Jo) Haley of Tobyhanna, PA, Fred (Sandie) Haley of Elkton, Ronald (Suk Cha) Haley of Belmar, NJ, Anson (Melanie) Haley of Almont and Ennis Haley of Bad Axe; three daughters, Lois Rousse, of Benton, KY, Judy Milton, of Bay Port and Jewell (Michael) Kleekamp of Bad Axe; 25 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. Also surviving are seven brothers, Clarence (Kate) Schember of Lapeer, Kenneth (Lucille) Schember of Elkton, Earl (Doris) Schember of Gagetown, Jerry (Jane) Schember of Goodells, Robert Schember and Edward Schember both of Elkton and Wayne (Joanne) Schember of Pigeon, a sister, Alene McCracken of Bad Axe and a sister-in-law, Suzanne Schember of Pigeon.
Preceding her in death was a son, Edward; two grandchildren, Rebecca Rousse and Ronald Haley Jr.; a son-in-law, Larry Rouse; two brothers, Walter and Olin Schember.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, July 7, at the Owendale Community in Christ Church. Elder Ellis Gardner will officiate with burial in Grant Twp. Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 to 9 PM Friday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton and at the church after 10 AM Saturday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Community in Christ Church, Owendale or Bay Port and the Huron County Medical Care Facility.
