Fern M. Faupel

Fern M. Faupel, age 94, of Plainwell, formerly of Elkton, died Monday morning, November 16, at her home while under hospice care.

She was born May 24, 1915 to the late Charles and Minnie (Bleam) Heckroth at their home in Chandler Twp.

Fern grew up on a farm in Chandler Twp. and attended Rock City School on State Park Rd., her mother would not let her start school until she was seven because she thought it was to far for a little girl to walk alone. She also attended one of the Chandler schools, Caseville School and graduated from Elkton High School in 1934.

On July 9, 1938, she was united in marriage to Aaron Faupel and was attended by her brother, Ray and his sister, Jewell, at her parent's home and moved to a farm just north of Elkton in 1942.

Fern was a farm wife and also worked on the Election Board in Chandler Twp., and often claimed that it was the only time she received a pay check.

She and Aaron started wintering in Florida in 1972 and in 1984 they retired and became permanent residents in Florida. Aaron passed away February 5, 1998, and later that year Fern moved back to Michigan to be near her family.
Fern was a long time member of the Elkton United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Surviving are her son, Ken (Liz) Faupel of Richland; daughter-in-law, Mary Faupel of Parchment; four grandsons, Tom (Michelle), Ron (Debbie), Matt (Julie) and Mike (Yvonne); six great grandchildren; her sister, Lela (Cal) Reibling of Chandler Twp and sister-in-law, Jewell Wycincky of Escondido, CA.
Preceding her in death was her son, Larry Faupel in 2002 and her brother, Ray Heckroth in 2003.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, November 21, at the Elkton United Methodist Church. Rev. Craig Pillow, pastor will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Elkton.

Memorials may be directed to the Elkton United Methodist Women or Bay Shore Camp.
Friends may call at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton from 2 to 8 PM Friday and at the church after 10 AM Saturday.
