Fred Greenfield, age 81, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility, following a lingering illness. He was born September 28, 1925 in Caro, the son of the late Cecil and Lorena (Wiltse) Greenfield. He graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1943 and was enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps after graduation. Following his basic training, he was sent to Las Vegas for Gunnery School where he learned to operate all gun positions. He arrived in Wales on July 23, 1944 and was part of the 8th Air Force, 36th Bomb Squadron flying out of England. He earned an American Service Medal, a European, African, Middle Eastern Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and Air Medal with three Bronze Clusters. He was united in marriage to Gloria Achenbach on February 26, 1949 in Monroe, Michigan, and celebrated 58 years of marriage. Fred owned and operated Freds Men Shop in Caro for 45 years. He was a member of the Caro First Presbyterian Church, Caro Mt. Moriah Lodge 226, the Caro American Legion Post 7, Caro VFW Post 4164, a former member of the Caro Gun Club and the Caro Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, skiing, golf and traveling. Fred is survived by his wife, Gloria Greenfield of Caro; three sons and their spouses, Greg Greenfield of Mount Hood, OR, Chris & Laura Greenfield of Mansfield, MA, and Scott & Donna Greenfield of Colorado Springs, CO; three grandchildren, Shelby, Tyler, and Ryan Greenfield. Fred was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Greenfield in 1940 and one sister, Phyllis Alcorn Gromek in 2004.
