Fred Kern

Fred Kern of Caro, age 93, passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at Stonegate Health Campus in Lapeer. Fred was born December 25, 1928, in Fairgrove, the son of the late Henry and Wanda (Grunch) Kern. On January 30, 1954, Fred married the former Cleo Mae Kreps in Caro, and the couple cherished fifty-four years together before her passing in 2008. He took great pride in his hard work and the many years he worked at Saginaw Gray Iron Foundry, where he eventually retired as a general foreman. Being a skilled handyman, Fred was involved in building and renovating a number of homes, and was especially proud of his rebuilt family cottage in Caseville. Fred was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro. Left to cherish his memory are three children, Tim & Mary Kern of Bay City, Tom Kern of Reese, and Penny & Charlie Kurzer of Metamora; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, Fred was preceded in death by his thirteen siblings, and his loving mother-in-law, Violet Kreps. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro with Rev. Cameron Steele officiating. Burial will take place later in the day at Indianfields Township Cemetery in Caro.
