Fred John Matt

Fred John Matt of Unionville, age 84, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at Medilodge of Cass City. He was born November 30, 1931 at the family home in Columbia Township, the son of the late John and Marie (Stingle) Matt, and was a lifelong Columbia Township resident and self-employed farmer. Fred graduated from the Abke Country School and served in the U.S. Army, where he completed his high school equivalence. On April 12, 1958, Fred was united in marriage with the former Joan Marie Lassiter at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Gagetown, and she preceded him in death on January 2, 2004. Fred loved farming and was very proud of his collection of John Deere tractors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was a member of the Sebewaing American Legion Post #293, and was very involved in the church life of St. Agatha Parish. Fred is survived by three children and their spouses, Lisa & Kurt Letsche of Evart, Jay Matt and his friend, Denise Dickson, of Unionville, Paris Frank, and her friend, Rod Simons, of Farwell; three grandchildren, Heidi and Rachel Letsche, Taylor & Jeff Punches of Clare; his siblings, Bill Matt of Unionville, Angeline Reff of Bay City, Maryjane Kramp of Chelsea, Joan & Jim Joyce of Temecula, California; and several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Gagetown with Father Robert Kelm officiating. Burial with military honors under the auspices of the Sebewaing American Legion Post #293 and the United States Army will follow at St. Agatha Cemetery.
