Frederick John McCarthy of Caro, age 71, passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He was born in Grand Rapids on October 31, 1954, the son of the late Gerald and Loraine (Welch) McCarthy. Fred graduated from Catholic Central in Grand Rapids with the class of 1973. He married the former Gloria Decker on June 18, 1981. Their marriage spanned over three decades before her passing in 2013.
Fred was a man who never met a stranger, only friends he hadn’t laughed with yet. Known as “Uncle Fred” to just about everyone, he lived his life by giving everything he had and always trying to put a smile on your face.
Fred was generous to his core, always willing to help anyone who needed it. Whether it was lending a hand, offering support, or simply showing up, he gave freely and without hesitation. His kindness was matched only by his sense of humor, which could light up any room and turn an ordinary day into a memorable one. A true lover of life’s simple pleasures, Fred enjoyed visiting every brewery he could find and loved attending beer festivals. He also enjoyed bowling and looked forward each year to his annual fishing trip. NASCAR Sundays with the boys were among his favorite traditions, as were casino trips, especially playing the slots.
Fred was a member and former president of the St. Isidore Benevolent Aid Society. He often joked that he was “an Irish man teaching the Polish how to drink,” a line that perfectly captured his wit and charm. Fred’s smile was constant, his presence comforting, and his spirit unforgettable. He will forever be remembered as generous, hilarious, and always raising a glass to life.
Fred leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Krystal (Jason) Owen; his beloved grandchildren, Josilyn, Gavin, Samuel, and Aaron; siblings, Melvin McCarthy, Kathy (John) Ciarrachi, and Bernie Gull; goddaughters, Mary (Robert) Irwin and Alice (Randy) Poll; his dear, lifelong friend, Kathleen Wellington; several nieces and nephews; many other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents and wife, Fred was preceded in death by his brother, Michael McCarthy and stepsons, Johnny and Billy.
In keeping with Fred’s wishes cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life is being planned. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the wishes of the family, c/o Krystal Owen.
