Fred Niebel, age 68 years, of Caro, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Caro Community Hospital. Fred was born on April 15, 1940 in Cass City to the late Stanley and Maxine (Banister) Niebel. Frederick Niebel was a Caro High School graduate and a U.S. Navy veteran. He and the former Janice Day were united in marriage on July 31, 1965 at the Caro United Methodist Church. Fred had been employed at both Eaton and Grede Foundries in Vassar. He loved the out-of-doors, playing with his grandchildren, playing his trumpet, and working on anything with a motor. He was a member of the Caro United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Janice; three daughters, Sonya (Kevin) Flegel of Big Rapids, Rachel (Bill) DeLong of Lansing and Diana (Rick) Hawkins of Bellaire; seven grandchildren, Kyle Thede, Heather Thede, Amanda Thede, Robbie DeLong, Cameron DeLong, Ricky Hawkins and Riley Hawkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jo Anne Spaulding. The funeral service will be held at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Cremation will follow the service and the cremains will be interred in the Almer Township Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Collon Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. until the time of service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Caro United Methodist Church or the charity of the donors choice.
