Frederick Nelson Severn of Elkton, age 94, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. Born on March 17, 1931, in Oliver Township, he was the son of the late Nelson and Mary Ann (Higgs) Severn. Fred was born deaf and had to learn and adapt to his surroundings. He attended a country school and later, a school for the deaf. Fred helped his parents run an adult foster care home, cooking, cleaning, and caring for residents and his parents until their passing.
Fred’s brother, Peter, was a glassblower at the University of Michigan. Through Peter's connection to a doctor specializing in cochlear implants, Fred underwent a life-changing surgery at the age of 65. For the first time, he heard words—an experience that opened a new chapter in his life. With the unwavering support of his best friend, James Ewald, who became like a brother to him after they met in 1973, Fred learned to speak and embrace the sounds of the world around him. He found immense joy in nature. Fred loved wandering the woods, listening to the birds, and watching the squirrels. An avid hunter, he delighted in pursuing the biggest turkey and hunting deer. His skills as a craftsman were equally impressive. Fred had a remarkable talent for woodworking, building beautiful furniture using only pegs and glue – never nails; he even constructed entire houses deep in the woods.
In his later years, Fred became a cherished resident of the Huron Medical Care Community at the age of 90. There, the staff became an extension of his family, offering care and friendship that he deeply appreciated. Fred held a special place in their hearts, and his love for his furry companion, Jack, brought him great comfort and happiness. Fred leaves behind a legacy of love, determination, and craftsmanship that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Fred leaves to cherish his memory, his best friend who was like a brother, James Ewald; niece, Sandra (William) Kulenkamp; great-niece, Kristie Centilli and family; great-nephew, James Scott (Becky) Centilli and family; James’ sister, Judy Ewald; and his dog, Jack. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Peter & Nettie Severn.
Fred’s funeral service will be at 1:00pm on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Pigeon. Rev. Karen Bouverette will officiate with the burial following at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 10:00am until 1:00pm. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to Huron County Medical Care Facility for their activities and outings, Fred so enjoyed.
