Gary A. Harris , age 80, of Sebewaing passed away August 3, 2022 at Ascension St. Mary's hospital in Saginaw.
Gary was born in Bay City on January 20, 1942 to William and Dorothy (Nimtz) Harris. With being born in 1942 during WWII, Gary's mother had to leave and work in Detroit at a factory. She left him for 5 years and was cared for by Cliff and Laura Bates in Sebewaing. Gary attended St. Peter's Lutheran School in Bach and graduated from Sebewaing High School in 1960. He helped out on the family farm until he was drafted into the United States Army from 1964-1966. He was assigned to the Presidents Honor Guard at Ft. McNair in Washington D.C. There he participated in the Presidential inauguration of Lyndon Johnson, stood Guard at Kennedy's gravesite, participated in approximately 250 military funerals, many parades and honor cordons. He worked at General Motors in Saginaw from 1966-1974. In 1974 he worked as a Real Estate Broker in residential and commercial listings. He then worked for the Sebewaing Post Office as a mail carrier from 1992 and retiring in 2016. His hobbies were watching his grandchildren's events (concerts, plays, sports), but most of all just spending time with his grandchildren. Many will miss seeing him drive around town in his corvette.
Gary is survived by his son, Steven (Tracey) Harris of Sebewaing and step daughter, Jill Cederberg of Essexville; grandchildren: Laci Harris, Joshua (Danielle) Woodruff, Marissa Woodruff, Kaitlyn (Nathan) Mielke, Zachary Garcia and Cody Cederberg.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents: William Harris and Dorothy (Arnold) Weippert.
A memorial service is planned for Monday, August 8, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 800 E. Bay St., Sebewaing. Visitation will begin at 10am until the time of service at 11am. Pastor Charles Kuhl will be officiating. Military honors will take place outside after the church service.
Memorial donations may be given to Thumb Animal Shelter.
