George Louis Abke of Caro, age 94, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2022 at Medilodge of Frankenmuth. George was born May 10, 1928 in Caro, the son of the late Albert and Bertha (Phettaplace) Abke and was a 1947 graduate of Caro High School. He was united in marriage later that same year with the former Betty Jean Klein on November 1, 1947 in Caro. Betty preceded him in death January 23, 2009. George worked at the Caro Creamery, Caro Floral, and Eaton Foundry, later Grede Foundry, in Vassar. He retired in 1981 as an inspector for the company after thirty years of service. George was a founding member of the Caro Eagles and was currently a member of the Caro Moose Lodge and the Caro Polish American Club. George was an avid gardener and enjoyed canning and tending to his chickens and bees. Although ornery at times, he had a generous spirit and gave faithfully to several charities. He enjoyed a cold beer, buying lottery tickets, and was an accomplished wine maker. George is survived by four children, Judy Clarkson, Beth Mellendorf, Linda Henderson, Denise Keilitz and her husband, Dean, all of Caro; nine grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Abke. In addition to his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by two sons, Randy and Gregory; two grandsons, Grant Clarkson and Dale Abke; great-grandchildren, Geneviere and Bradley; sons-in-law, Don Karr, Ron Clarkson, Jeff Mellendorf, and Bill Henderson; and four siblings, Vila, Ronald, Hazen, and Eloise. In keeping with George's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service is being planned for a later date.
