George L. Lawrence , age 85, of Sebewaing, passed away January 17, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.
George was born in Bad Axe on June 26, 1937, to the late Walter and Frances (Laisure) Lawrence. He graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1955. He was a U.S. Army veteran with service in Germany. George married Frances Guza on February 20, 1960 at Parisville Catholic Church. He was employed with the Michigan Department of Transportation for 38 years, retiring in 1994. He was a life-long Catholic and served in several church ministries, including Eucharistic Minister, Parish Council President, usher, and served communion to the homebound. He was a member and flag bearer for the Knights of Columbus. He was also the Past President for the State Union (UTEA). He enjoyed winters spent in Florida where he liked to play shuffle board. He also enjoyed watching football, gardening, fishing and visiting with family and friends. George had a large loving family and will be greatly missed.
George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Fran; children: Debbie (Doug) Gerstler, Linda (Bill) Minarik, Karen (Doug) Tenbusch, Carol Lawrence, Deanna (Rich) Koon, Robert (Julie) Lawrence; 12 grandchildren: Scott (Mallory) Gerstler, Ashlee (David) Hockett, Erica (Alan) Park, Tony Minarik, Jennifer (Jeremy) Kilbourn, Jessica (Chris) Hahn, Randy (Christin) Tenbusch, Jeff (Danielle) Tenbusch, Rick (Amber) Koon, Katie (Jared) Parker, Kevin Koon and Meghan Lawrence; 13 great grandchildren; brother, Fred (Rita) Lawrence; brother-in-law, Marty Guza; sister-in-laws: Georgeann Guza and Shirley Guza; several nieces and nephews.
George is preceded in death by his brother John (Gertrude); and sister, Mary (Alex) Porzse.
Visitation will be Friday, January 20, 2023 at Juengel-Mellendorf Funeral Home from 2:30pm-7:30pm with a Rosary service at 6pm.
The funeral service will be Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Our Lady Consolata Catholic Church in Sebewaing. Visitation will begin at the church at 10am until the time of service at 11am. Burial will be at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Unionville.
Memorial donations may be given to the family (c/o Frances Lawrence).
