Gerald W. Bletl, age 70, of Elkton died Saturday afternoon, September 14, under hospice care at the Huron County Medical Care Facility.
He was born May 4, 1943, in Detroit to the late Joseph and Marguerite (Cook) Bletl. He grew up in the Elkton area and was raised by his grandparents.
He met his future wife, Catherine McNeil at a church sing along. On August 21, 1965, they were united in marriage at the Elkton Methodist Parsonage. Shortly after, they moved to the Detroit area to look for work, returning to the thumb in 1969 to raise their family of four children and two of Catherine’s sister’s children after her passing.
Gerald worked various jobs in the Thumb, including maintenance at the Huron County Court house, the pickle factory and retired from maintenance a McDonald’s Restaurant in 2004.
He was a member of Victory in Christ Church, Bad Axe. He enjoyed gardening, fishing on Saginaw Bay, loved all animals and was known as quite the jokester. Gerald had a big heart, loved everybody and brought a smile to everyone he met. He will be sadly missed by his family especially his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine; six children, Everett (Sharon) Bletl of Elkton, Gloria (Pat) McArdle of Elkton, Matt (Carissa) Bletl of Bay Port, Laura (John) Walker of Ubly, June (Shawn) McIntyre of Applegate and Bill (Susan) Wolschlager of Killeen, TX; 18 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was a granddaughter, Sue Ann Bletl, his step-father, Don Gordon and his brother, Joseph Bletl.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, September 18, at Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. Rev. Stewart Justin, pastor of Victory in Christ Church will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Elkton.
Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 2 to 8 PM Tuesday and after 10 AM Wednesday.
