Gerald A. Himmel, age 72, of Caseville, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at his home while under hospice care.
Jerry was born October 10, 1936 in Chandler Township to the late John and Theresa (Gintner) Himmel. He grew up in the area and graduated from Pigeon High School. He served in the US Navy from 1955 to 1957. After being discharged from the Navy, Jerry moved to Detroit and lived there from 1958 to 1988. He retired from the Detroit Police Department in 1988, after 25 years of service, many of them as a helicopter pilot.
He moved to Caseville in 1988. Even after retiring, he worked part-time for the Caseville Police Department. He enjoyed boating, ham radio, and his home near Wildfowl Bay.
Surviving are his son Michael and his wife Lona of Shelby Township and daughter Stacy Himmel and her husband Jerrold Jacobson of Arcadia, Florida; granddaughters Lauren, Erika, Hannah Lee; and sisters Frances Richmond of Pigeon and Barbara and her husband Patrick Dell of Caseville.
He was preceded in death by his two-year-old daughter Michelle Lee in 1961 and brothers John, Duane and Robert.
Funeral services will be at 4:00PM Sunday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville with Fr. Kenneth Yaroch officiating. Urn burial with military honors will be at St. Roch Cemetery.
A memorial visitation will be 10:00AM to 4:00 PM Sunday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville.
