Gertrude Mathews

Gertrude Mathews, age 73 years, passed away Monday, May 14, 2012 at her residence in Golden, Mississippi. The former Gertrude Ollila was born on May 3, 1939 in Royal Oak, the daughter of the late Otto and Saimi (Onkala) Ollila. She moved from the Detroit area to Mayville and attended Bruisee Country School and Mayville High School. The former Gertrude Louise Ollila and Lee Mathews were united in marriage on October 13, 1989 in Caro. The Mathews moved from Mayville to Mississippi in 2007. In her earlier years, she worked as a waitress and in small shops. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting to such an extent that she once owned a fabric store. Gertrude also enjoyed crafts, trips to the Casino, and gardening. She was a loving grandmother, and even with her family so far apart, she enjoyed her time with them. In addition to her husband, Lee, she is survived by her children, Timothy Bruce and Tammy Bruce, both of Michigan, Terry Bruce of Las Vegas, Nevada, Anthony & Virginia Bruce of Las Vegas, Nevada, Tawnia & Brian Harp of Colorado; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her step-children, Michael & Patty Mathews of Lum, Steve & Joanne Mathews of Brown City, John & Heather Mathews of Kingston; a brother and his wife, Matt & Garnet Ollila of Vassar; a sister-in-law, Bette Ollila of Las Vegas, Nevada; her step-sisters; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the remainder of her siblings, Barbara Box, Ray and Roy Ollila. A funeral service has been planned for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Pastor Jerome Bouverette officiating. The family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider contributions to the Gertrude Mathews Family Discretionary Fund, c/o Lee Mathews, 205 W.
