Gladys Maust

July 27, 1957 — May 29, 2025

Bay Port

Gladys (Byler) Maust, age 67, of Bay Port, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on May 29, 2025.

Gladys was born on July 27, 1957, in Greenwood, Delaware to Lydia (Emerson) Byler and the late Raymond Byler. Her family taught her to be a lifelong nurturer with a heart of compassion in reflection of Jesus Christ. She was married to Calvin Maust in 1979 and moved to Bay Port, Michigan. They were married for 46 years, and together, they farmed and raised a family. Gladys’s faith was the center of her life and carried her through many years of health challenges.

Gladys found great joy in her family, friends, faith, and crafts. She was a talented quilter and a faithful member of the Pigeon River Mennonite Church, where her passions for cooking, quilting, and fellowship were lived out. Her home was often filled with friends and the aroma of home-cooked meals.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Calvin Maust, and their children: Carrie Gutierrez, Chris Maust, and Jesse Maust, married to Katie Maust. She was a beloved grandmother to Veronica Gutierrez and to Lydia, Poppy, and Lucy Maust. Gladys is also survived by her mother, Lydia Emerson, and siblings: Ruth Stoltzfus, Lois Demerich, Regina Miller, Linda Mathews, and Greg Byler.

She was preceded in death by her father Raymond Byler, and her son-in-law Alberto Gutierrez.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the University of Michigan LVAD team for their compassionate care and support.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 11:00am, at Pigeon River Mennonite Church. A viewing will take place on Friday, June 13 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm at Champagne Funeral Chapel, 7356 w. Michigan Ave., Pigeon, Michigan. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Gladys’s life.
