Glen Irwin Harrington of Akron, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2019. Glen was born November 14, 1925 at home in Akron, the son of the late Ralph & Elsie May (Frank) Harrington. He graduated from Akron High School with the class of 1943 and furthered his studies in an agriculture short course at Michigan State University. He was united in marriage with the former Margaret "Ruth" Becker on October 1, 1949 in Akron, and Ruth preceded him in death on July 10, 2018. Life for Glen revolved around the farm, and he enjoyed decades of raising crops with his beloved Ruth. He was inducted as an honorary member of the Michigan Crop Improvement Association, member of the Michigan Foundation Seed Association, serving as its president from 1966 to 1971 and its representative to the Michigan Agricultural Association for many years. He was appointed by the governor to the Michigan Bean Commission, serving as the board's assistant secretary, vice chairman and chairman. Glen was also a Farm Bureau member, serving on several of its committees, and taught numerous 4-H projects. He was an active member of the Caro First Baptist Church. Glen and Ruth were founding members of the Cass City Square Dancing Club which they enjoyed for over fifty years. Left to cherish his memory are five children and their spouses, Greg Harrington of Akron, Brent Harrington of Caro, Gene & Wendy Harrington of Akron, Karen Harrington of Akron, Marilyn & Tim Harms of Grand Rapids; seven grandchildren, Jared Stilson of Caro, Jade Stilson of St. Clair Shores, Andrew Harrington and his wife, Katelyn of Allendale, Luke Harrington of Akron, Sarah Harms of Hudsonville, Austin Harms of Kent, Washington, Rosemary Harms of Grand Rapids; one brother, Clare Harrington of Quanicassee; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Glen was preceded in death by three siblings, Dorothy, Donald, and infant Keith Harrington; and one daughter-in-law, Sherri Harrington. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 9, 2019 at the Caro First Baptist Church with Rev. Marc Herron officiating. Burial will follow at a later time at Demorest Cemetery in Akron. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Caro First Baptist Church or the donor's favorite charity.
