Gordon Sayers

Gordon Sayers of Caro, age 96, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at Agape Care AFC Home in Caro. Gordon was born June 17, 1919 on the family homestead in Caro, the son of the late Earl & Edna (Harris) Sayers. He served his country in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 as an MP, troop trainer and medic, and was stationed in Europe for over a year. Gordon was united in marriage to the former Opal Nicholson on January 23, 1946 in Decatur, Illinois, and she preceded him in death on August 9, 2007. Gordon was a lifelong farmer, and returned to the family farm upon his return from the service. In addition to farming, Gordon also worked for General Motors in Saginaw and the Caro Regional Center, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Fairgrove VFW Post 7486 and the Caro Moose Lodge. Gordon was happiest when he was talking to people and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards, horseshoes, shuffleboard and traveling to visit family. Gordon is survived by five children and their spouses, Judy & Larry Clarke of Morley, MI, Donald & Rebecca Sayers of Caro, Marleen & Jerome Grammentz of Elkton, Wayne & Susan Sayers of Caro, Mary & Dennis Sweeney of Holt, MI; ten grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren plus twin girls expected in May; and many nieces and nephews. Gordon was preceded in death by one brother, Howard; and one sister, Mildred Sayers. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Rev. Michele Hile officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Indianfields Township Cemetery in Caro. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to Compassus Hospice.
